Yesterday Bryn and I went with our friends the Bramens to Longwood Gardens -- our last field trip of the summer. Established in the early 1900s by Pierre duPont, Longwood Gardens encompasses more than 1,000 acres and features 20 indoor and 20 outdoor gardens. I had been a couple of times before, but only to the conservatory. Yesterday was the first time that I walked some of the grounds, and they are spectacular. Bryn and Sydney had a great time running across the huge lawn, as well as exploring the new children's garden. Here the girls are with Sam, too, in front of flowers that were taller than all of us.

The lilypad pools featured one variety of lilypad that is so big it can support more than 100 lbs (look in the background of the picture of Bryn below.)

We also saw two short fountain shows and climbed up two of the new treehouses. All in all it was a very pleasant way to spend a couple of hours.
