New Cousin Prompts a Trip to Pittsburgh

We were able to take advantage of a long weekend by going to Pittsburgh to meet Bryn and Luke's new cousin, Beckett, who's now 8 weeks old. Bryn and Luke were most attentive to Beckett; they both enjoyed giving him a bottle.
We babysat Saturday night, and Bryn got very concerned whenever Beckett fussed. "Mom, do SOMETHING!"
We spent all of Saturday -- 4.5 hours -- at the Carnegie Science Center and its neighboring Sports Works.
We started at the exhibit on robotics, which the kids had seen in May when we were in town for Karlye's baby shower. The exhibit is really neat, and showcases Vlad who can sink basketballs. We sat through part of a presentation on the different parts of the brain and the functions for which each is responsible. We saw a 15-minute presentation on static electricity and learned about AC/DC -- accelerating current and direct current. We watched my hair stand on end, and we watched a small shock of electricity travel through a group of audience members who were holding hands. We experienced an earthquake through a simulation. We toured a submarine that was commissioned for the Second World War. And after lunch we went to Sports Works where the kids timed their sprinting; charted their high jumping skills; waited in a long line to bounce on a trampoline;

and tackled a 24-foot-high rock climbing wall. Luke made it halfway and Bryn made it to the top!

Sunday morning we had brunch with the Nurys and Mike, Karlye and Beckett. There were lots of Steelers fans in the restaurant:

We look forward to seeing Beckett again at Christmastime in Florida.
