As has been the case every year, Nama came up for Bryn -- and Luke's -- dance recital. Bryn performed ballet -- Purple Petticoats-- in the 2:00 show, and we had about 45 minutes to kill before Bryn and Luke were together in "Everybody Dance Now" at 4. In her ballet performance, Bryn was one of the most graceful dancers, and when we said good-bye to her ballet teacher, Ms. Marla, Ms. Marla told Bryn that she has "a special talent" and "could be a professional ballerina." Marla said she has said that to very few students, and she encouraged me to look into the San Francisco Ballet's ballet school. Bryn doesn't seem to have the same passion for ballet as she does the faster dances, but she may be willing to take ballet again in the fall with a new teacher and a new group of classmates. She said some of the girls in Ms. Marla's ballet class were "really annoying," and that seemed to negatively impact her experience.
As the only boy in the jazz number, Luke was the star in that he kicked off the dance. He was center stage, and before the music began, he looked nervous and he looked as though he was about to burst into tears. Ken and I were really surprised to see him this way as he had performed at the Narberth Train Station and had attended the dress rehearsal. What's more, Luke is outgoing and a bit of a showman. But somehow, once the music started, he managed to pull himself together. He didn't know the routine as well as Bryn, but it didn't matter. His teacher told me after the fact that "he made the dance," and that the dance "needed a little something extra" that Luke brought to it. Both Bryn and Luke are interested in taking hip hop/jazz in the fall, so I will look to find a new dance studio in Marin.
