A woman with whom I play tennis told me about a nearby ice skating rink that offers an open session weekdays from 10 to 12. So with Luke at school, Bryn and I went for the first time. The rink did something I had never seen before but thought was ingenious: it made available plastic lawn chairs that beginners could push along the rink for balance. In this way, Bryn never fell, and with my pushing from behind, she got to experience gliding on the ice. We spent a half an hour on the ice, and we slowly made our way around the rink three or four times. At times Bryn giggled, and I think the experience was a hit with her. When we took our skates off, she said, "Ice skating is harder than I thought." And she's absolutely right; it was harder than I had remembered, too.
