Road Trip

We drove to Pittsburgh this past weekend to visit Ken's grandmother, who hadn't yet met Luke, and to see Karlye and Mike's new house. We left around 6:15 p.m., with the hope that Luke, who hates being in the car for more than 15 minutes at a time, would fall asleep sometime between 7:30 and 8. But he didn't fall asleep until after 9, and despite having Baby Einstein videos on, back-to-back, he fussed and cried for the better part of my two hour-leg of driving. We arrived at Karlye and Mike's at 11:30 p.m., and both kids, upon seeing that they were some place new, found a second wind. They didn't fall back to sleep until 1 a.m.!

We tried a different tactic on the way home: We got on the road at 2:00, after spending an hour and a half at the fabulous children's museum -- and forgoing Luke's morning nap. Both kids slept for at least two hours, and Luke fussed for only the last 50 minutes. As he was at Christmas, Luke is at a really difficult age when it comes to travel. Bryn, on the other hand, has an attention span and is quite content watching one episode of Caillou after the next.
