Ringing in the New Year

On New Year's Eve we took Bryn and Luke to one of our new favorite restaurants, Distrito, which is located on the far-edge of Penn's campus at the corner of Chestnut and 40th Streets. On the ground floor there's a convertible VW beetle with a table in the body of the car, and Ken had made a reservation for the car, but unfortunately, the restaurant had had a flood and wasn't serving anyone on the ground floor. We missed our chance at sitting in the car, but the kids still had fun in the vibrant restaurant where they drank strawberry juice and ate a lot of homemade guacamole and chips; beans and rice; and cheese quesadilla.
From there we went to the Penn Bookstore and got new, larger Penn t-shirts for the kids, then to the Palestra to watch a Penn Women's basketball game. It was Luke's first basketball game, and after seeing a bit of basketball in the "High School Musical" movies, he seemed interested, though ear plugs were required. (After five minutes, Bryn resorted to the coloring pages that I happened to have in my purse.) Because the game took place during Penn's winter break, there were no cheerleaders and no band, so Ken wants to take the kids to a second game when there's more going on. The best part of the game, of which we watched half? Free admission!
