Today was a beautiful day, in the lower 70s, and now that it's May, the weekend pony rides at Hidden Valley Farm in Ridley Creek State Park have resumed. I thought Bryn would be elated to ride a pony after a six-month hiatus, but she insisted as we were getting ready to leave for the park and while in the car that she was interested in seeing the horses but she wasn't interested in going for a pony ride. We took baby carrots, and she and Ken gave horses treats while Luke and I waited in line for a pony ride. Thinking that she would change her mind, I bought a ticket for Bryn. Meanwhile, I didn't know if Luke would go on a pony ride without seeing Bryn do it first, but watching the other kids in line ahead of him was all he needed. When he saw the other kids riding the ponies, he was eager for his turn. Bryn held her ground, and when she visited me and Luke in line, she said again that she didn't want to go on a pony ride.
Luke had no hesitations whatsoever when it was his turn, and he didn't resist the helmet, either, which Bryn used to do when she first started riding. A month younger than Bryn when she was first exposed to pony rides, Luke rode like a pro, and when his turn ended, he wanted more.
Bryn and Ken missed Luke's first ride, but I'm confident there will be many more over the course of the summer. After Luke's pony ride, Bryn led us to the horses in the meadow. Only then did she say that she wanted to go for a pony ride, but by then, it was after 4:00, and the pony rides were over. She walked with slumped shoulders to the car, so hopefully next weekend, if the weather holds, both kids wil be back in the saddle.
